You Wanna Take This Outside?

The sky really is the limit when it comes to taking your exercise routine outdoors. Anywhere can become your own personal outdoor gym if you just think outside the box!

The sky really is the limit when it comes to taking your exercise routine outdoors. Anywhere can become your own personal outdoor gym if you just think outside the box!

Pick Your Favorite Spot

Start by picking a location that inspires you. For some that might mean the beach at sunrise where you can elevate your yoga practice. For others, a shady trail might be the ideal spot for a hike or off-road bike excursion. Even a trip to a local park or right in your own yard can be the perfect place for a great workout. You don’t need much space for body weight or circuit training routines that you can create on your own.  By incorporating easily transportable gear like light weights, resistance bands and medicine balls you can really amp up your workout. Switch it up during the week to keep your workouts fresh and fun.

Get the Right Outfit

What you wear can impact your performance significantly.  In warmer months, try to dress in cool, loose fitting clothing that is breathable and wicks away sweat. Light colored clothing is also a plus as it will reflect the sun and help keep your temperature regulated. As the weather begins to cool, add layers keeping the sweat-wicking clothing on the inside and the more insulating layer on top. An outer layer that protects you from the elements is necessary if you venture out in wet or windy conditions.

Sweat Happens

Timing is everything! The hottest part of the day is usually between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. so, unless you are one of those people who thrives when it is sweltering out, try to get out either earlier or later in the day.  Don’t wait until you begin to sweat or feel thirsty before you hydrate. In fact, you should ideally begin hydrating before you even get outside.  Water is the best choice but, if your workout will be longer than 60 minutes, try to include potassium and electrolytes to replenish and rehydrate. And, don’t stop hydrating as soon as you are done.  Continue to drink as many fluids as possible throughout the day to regulate your body.

Nothing is worse than trying to workout with a bad sunburn that makes it hard to move. Stop the burn before it even happens by slathering on the sunscreen. Opt for a mineral based, waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 35, so it doesn’t come off or get in your eyes once you start sweating. We love @Badgerbalm. This clear sunscreen cream has only 4 ingredients including zinc and vitamin E and is water and sweat resistant. If you plan to be outside for longer than 60 minutes, don’t forget to reapply!

PPB Tip:  Have a dry towel with you to use during your workout and another in your bag for after!

Aside from being refreshing and fun, exercising outdoors can do your mind and body a world of good, so ditch the treadmill and just take it outside!
