Searching for ways to make your workouts actually work at home? Unfortunately, opening and closing the refrigerator door or picking up and putting down the remote control just doesn't count! Bottom line - now is the time to get up and MOVE!

Even though we may not be able to go to the gym right now, it is not an excuse to stop being active! Keeping the body moving prevents pounds from creeping on, helps manage stress and promotes mental clarity.  It is more important than ever to incorporate physical fitness into our daily routines - we just have to get creative!

Regardless of whether or not you have gym equipment at home, you can still get your sweat on! Bodyweight exercises such as pushups, lunges, squats and planks require no special equipment. To make it even more of a challenge, using everyday household items as weights will amp up your workout. Did you know that a gallon jug of water weighs about 8 lbs? Grab some water bottles or canned goods to add that extra intensity! The kitchen counter can double as a ballet barre and the stairs can be used for additional cardio.

Many gyms, studios and fitness apps are currently offering free or discounted classes. Whatever your preference, there is something for everyone. From yoga and pilates to HIIT and dance, it's a great time to step out of your comfort zone. You never know - you may find your new passion.

For something a little more social, how about all of the challenges going viral on social media? Head over to Instagram for the #plankchallenge and #pushupchallenge. Or, connect with a  friend and check out TikTok to see which exercise videos are trending. Don’t forget to tag and post your accomplishments.

Now that the weather is improving, get outdoors!  Sunshine is a great mood booster and Vitamin D is essential to good health. Taking a brisk walk or a bike ride, while social distancing of course, gets the heart pumping. But, if that's not your thing, try some yard work. Preparing flower and vegetable beds for planting is a physical activity that is both healthy and productive. In a few months you will have a bountiful crop of fruits and vegetables to fuel your workouts.

Find what motivates you, stay on track, keep moving and have fun!
