Summer vacation canceled or on hold?  There is still time to plan a getaway that is socially responsible and fun: Camping!  Especially now, we should all be spending as much time outdoors as possible, but this summer it has been challenging to find safe and enjoyable options. Take a step away from the crowded beaches and find peace and tranquility off the beaten path.

Pack Light but Pack Right

Whether you are a seasoned camper or a first-timer, proper preparation can make or break your camping experience especially when it comes to packing. Changing weather conditions may require bringing several clothing options, even in warm weather, so plan for the unexpected.  Since rainstorms can pop up suddenly, waterproof gear and clothing are a must. Lightweight tarps are a camper's best friend to use as overhead shelter in case of a downpour as well as beneath your tent to keep it dry. For a good night’s sleep, opt for an all-weather sleeping bag along with a sleeping pad for additional cushioning (nobody likes to sleep on rocks!).

Fresh water is important to have on hand to stay hydrated as well as for cooking, hygiene and keeping your campsite clean.  How much to bring depends on the availability of water at your campsite and your level of activity. Avoid the burn by packing generous amounts of sunscreen and keep pesky mosquitoes away with an all natural citronella based repellent.  Don’t forget to bring plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

PPB Tip: Store toilet paper in an empty coffee can to keep it dry and clean for the whole trip.

Safety First

Vacations are all about fun, but when you are camping, safety should be a top priority.  Check out these tips to stay safe:

  • Campfires should be attended and at least 15 feet from your tent structure.  Always make sure campfires are completely extinguished before leaving.
  • To avoid attracting uninvited guests, store food in bear-safe containers, a food storage locker or in your car.
  • Lanterns and flashlights with extra batteries will come in handy, not only to keep your campsite and tent well lit, but also to keep you safe for late night bathroom trips.
  • Keep a compass on hand to make sure you can find your way back to camp.
  • Accidents do happen, always have a fully stocked emergency kit with you just in case.

Let the Fun Begin

When all the preparations are taken care of, there is nothing left to do but have fun. Whether you are the ‘rugged outdoorsy type’ or just like getting back to nature, there is something for everyone. Start your day right by experiencing the sunrise. This moment of tranquility will center you and get you ready for the adventures that await.  Depending on the season and your location, you can enjoy everything from hiking and kayaking to cooling off in a natural spring or discovering an unexpected waterfall.

One thing is for certain, outdoor activity and fresh air will work up quite an appetite.  Make sure to have a plentiful supply of healthy, non-perishable meals and snacks (such as Protein Power Ball) on hand to fuel the body and give you the energy you need to power through your adventure.

As your camping experience comes to a close, be mindful that you are a visitor in Mother Nature’s home. Remember to clean up around your campsite and always ‘leave it the way you found it’ to ensure that others will be able to enjoy the natural beauty for many years to come.
