Social distancing does not necessarily have to make us socially distant. Over the past weeks, we have been longing for the day when we can once again have in-person interactions. Now, as we slowly begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s time to learn how to navigate yet another ‘new normal’.
The late spring and summer months always bring a flurry of celebrations and fun activities. How will we manage to enjoy upcoming milestones and holidays while still staying safe? Although specific guidelines and timelines will vary by state, and even regions within states, we will be able to once again make plans and have fun with friends and family. As long as we stay vigilant by wearing a face covering in public, staying a safe distance from others, limiting the number of people at gatherings and diligently washing our hands, we can get out and enjoy.
The official beginning of summer, Memorial Day, is right around the corner. Although it may look different this year, it still marks the start of outdoor fun. Slowly but surely beaches and parks everywhere are re-opening. Keeping restrictions and distancing in mind, get out and take in the beautiful weather by bike riding, hiking or even just relaxing and soaking in some rays. Being outside and getting some of that much needed Vitamin D is also a great immune booster. Missing your annual backyard BBQ bash? Turn it into a potluck picnic. You may have to scale back the number of guests, but have your crew pack their own food, utensils and chairs/blanket and just enjoy being together!
Looking for a change of pace? Yoga is especially rejuvenating when practiced outside. Grab a bunch of friends for beach or lawn yoga. Mats can be placed a safe 6ft apart and you can enjoy the benefits of a workout and meditation together. Golfers can also now rejoice. While there may be some new rules to follow, as golf courses reopen, you can hit the links and brush up on your game.
Graduation season is upon us. Even though the high school and college graduates of 2020 are missing out on the usual pomp and circumstance that comes along with this milestone, you can still recognize their accomplishments and make them feel special. Shout it from the rooftops! Let your friends and neighbors know there is a new graduate in the house with lawn signs and door coverings that you can either order online or make yourself. And, while you’re at it, set up a parade of friends and family to drive by and honk their horns in unison in honor of your graduate. They worked hard! They deserve it!
Not yet feeling ready to take the leap and get out with others, or have underlying health concerns? It is still possible to enjoy all that the warm weather months bring. Any time spent outdoors will do wonders for your mood and overall well-being. Just a stroll in your neighborhood or enjoying a meal al-fresco in your backyard can do the trick. Keep the virtual lines of communication with your friends and family open, so you can participate in events and activities together even if you are not physically with each other.
Summer is the season that many of us look forward to all year long. Although different this year, it can still be memorable. Get creative and try some new activities to safely interact with friends and family!
